The Granatenwerfer 36 was designed to be an extremely lightweight and portable mortar for German infantry. First built in 1936, the leGrW 36 mortar up to 90 degrees of elevation was highly useful in lobbing explosive rounds high into the air and being able to drop them with precision either into trenches, behind obstacles or to saturate a previously scouted area or choke point that had been "dialed in".
